Xpeng Teases Range Rover-Like GX SUV: 6-Seater Flagship with Advanced AI Tech and Steer-by-Wire

Xpeng GX: Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng has previewed a brand-new premium SUV, the Xpeng GX, signaling its ambition to move further upmarket with a technologically advanced, full-size family vehicle. Internally codenamed G01, the upcoming model is expected to sit at the top of Xpeng’s SUV lineup and bears a striking resemblance to the iconic Land Rover Range Rover in its overall silhouette.

The company released the first three official images of the GX on Chinese social media platform Weibo on Thursday, marking the model’s public debut. While Xpeng has stopped short of revealing full specifications, the teaser offers important insights into the SUV’s design philosophy, positioning, and advanced technology platform.

Range Rover-Inspired Design Signals Premium Intent

From the images shared, the Xpeng GX immediately stands out as a large, imposing SUV with clean lines, a boxy stance, and a commanding road presence—design cues that closely mirror the Range Rover’s signature look. The upright proportions, long wheelbase, and minimalist surfacing suggest that Xpeng is targeting buyers who value luxury, space, and understated sophistication.

The GX is a six-seat SUV, indicating a focus on family-oriented buyers seeking both comfort and versatility. According to Xpeng, the vehicle has been designed as a full-size flagship family SUV, placing it firmly in the premium segment of China’s fast-growing electric vehicle market.

G01 Codename Reflects “First Principles” Thinking

Explaining the significance of the GX, He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of Xpeng, said the SUV’s internal development code G01 reflects the company’s intent to rethink the large SUV category from scratch.

“The number ‘1’ signifies starting from first principles,” He wrote on Weibo, adding that the GX represents Xpeng’s attempt to reimagine a flagship family SUV using comprehensive AI-driven thinking rather than simply evolving an existing model.

The name GX itself carries symbolic meaning. According to He, the letter “X” stands for eXploration, representing both the pursuit of the unknown in future mobility and Xpeng’s technological DNA, which the company refers to as X-Tech.

Built on New SEPA 3.0 AI Vehicle Architecture

One of the most significant aspects of the GX is its foundation. The SUV is built on Xpeng’s new SEPA (Smart Electric Platform Architecture) 3.0, which the company describes as a physical AI vehicle architecture.

According to He Xiaopeng, SEPA 3.0 enables a generational leap in integration, intelligence, vehicle handling, and safety philosophy. The architecture is designed to deeply integrate software, hardware, and artificial intelligence, allowing vehicles to be more adaptive, responsive, and future-ready.

This platform is expected to support advanced driver assistance systems, high levels of automation, and improved vehicle dynamics, positioning the GX as one of Xpeng’s most technologically ambitious models to date.

Advanced Steering Technologies for Agile Handling

Despite its large size, the Xpeng GX is being engineered for agility and ease of driving. He confirmed that the SUV will feature steer-by-wire technology, eliminating the traditional mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels. This system allows for faster response, customizable steering feel, and improved integration with advanced driver assistance systems.

In addition, the GX will also be equipped with rear-wheel steering, a feature typically found in high-end luxury vehicles. Rear-wheel steering enhances low-speed maneuverability—making parking and city driving easier—while also improving stability and handling at higher speeds.

These technologies are expected to give the GX a combination of comfort, confidence, and surprisingly nimble driving characteristics, despite its full-size footprint.

Xpeng Teases Borrowing Comfort DNA from the X9 MPV

Xpeng has also drawn heavily from its X9 MPV, currently the company’s most premium and expensive offering. According to He Xiaopeng, the GX inherits the X9’s strengths in spaciousness, comfort, and flexible drivability.

This suggests that the GX will prioritize passenger comfort, especially for second- and third-row occupants, making it well-suited for long-distance travel and daily family use. The six-seat layout further supports this focus, likely offering captain seats in the second row for a more luxurious experience.

Powertrain Options Yet to Be Confirmed

Xpeng has not officially disclosed the powertrain configurations for the GX. However, industry expectations suggest that the SUV could be offered in both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants.

This would align with Xpeng’s recently adopted dual-power strategy, under which new and updated models are launched with both BEV and EREV options to cater to a broader range of customers and charging scenarios.

Several of Xpeng’s recent launches have followed this approach, reflecting growing consumer interest in extended-range EVs in China, especially for larger and more expensive vehicles.

Positioned Above the G9 in Pricing and Size

Within Xpeng’s current SUV lineup, the company sells the G6, G7, and G9, with the G9 being the most premium. The G9 is priced between RMB 248,800 and RMB 278,800 (approximately $35,840 at the starting point).

The upcoming GX is expected to be positioned above the G9, both in terms of size and price. Market expectations suggest a price range between RMB 400,000 and RMB 500,000, placing it firmly in the premium and near-luxury category.

For context, Xpeng’s current highest-priced model is the X9 MPV, which starts between RMB 309,800 and RMB 329,800.

Sales Context and Market Position

Xpeng delivered 20,011 vehicles in January, according to figures released on February 1. This represented a 34.07% decline year-on-year and a 46.65% drop month-on-month, highlighting the challenges currently facing the Chinese EV market. The company did not provide a model-wise breakdown of deliveries.

In 2025, the G9 SUV delivered 27,716 units, accounting for 6.45% of Xpeng’s total annual deliveries, with a modest 2.83% year-on-year increase, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

The GX is expected to play a crucial role in Xpeng’s efforts to strengthen its premium image and improve margins by competing in higher price brackets.

A Strategic Step Toward the Premium EV Segment

With the GX, Xpeng is clearly signaling its intention to challenge established luxury players—both domestic and international—in the full-size SUV space. The combination of Range Rover-like design, cutting-edge AI architecture, advanced steering systems, and flexible powertrain options positions the GX as one of the company’s most important upcoming launches.
